From Toceno, climb to the upper part of the town along Via per Arvogno. Take the street on the right that heads to Mondei (the arrow indicating trail M27) and at the end of the paved road, turn left to enter a track that, with a slight incline, crosses the woods above Toceno. Just before crossing the road for Arvogno, enter into trail M25 (part of the Grande Traversata delle Alpi or GTA) and start the ascent up the pretty mule track with numerous bends. The truly unique appearance of the pine forests (which you’ll note on the first part of the ascent) is due to the presence of considerably old trees which display the hallmarks of resin extraction, an important business in this valley for some time. The trail continues along a lengthy ridge, arrives at Colma di Fuori and then comes to a dirt road that leads to Piana di Vigezzo. From here, turning left is advised, heading to Colma di Dentro and then Piana di Vigezzo along the track that lets out onto the plain to the north of the mountaintop.
From the plain, you can return to the valley on the funicular. Or you can cross Colma di Craveggia and descend along the service track for the mountain pastures with a few stretches of the trail cutting across the numerous hairpin turns. Once you’ve reached Cravegia, follow the main road towards Vocogno and then return to Toceno.
Notes: This loop route features a climb from Colma di Toceno and a descent from Colma di Craveggia. The itinerary may be made easier by taking the funicular instead of covering the ascent on foot.
