From Staffa, cross through all of Dorf (its ancient town centre) towards Pecetto, but shortly after the old church (Chiesa Vecchia) turn right to climb up towards Alpe Bill on an obvious trail which at times is made up of the remaining traces of an old mule track. From Alpe Bill, the trail rises along the ski slopes and shortly crosses over the edge of the woods, heading uphill on high altitude meadows and screes. The long ascent finally reaches the Rifugio Oberto Maroli mountain hut, near the funicular’s arrival station. With one last uphill burst on a rocky trail outfitted with wooden steps and a handrail, you’ll reach the statue of the Virgin Mary at the Moro Pass, where the panoramic view is 360° around you, from the Saas Valley to the slopes of Mount Rosa.
Notes: This hike is the third stretch of the “Stra’ Granda”, the historic road that connected to the Saas Valley. The trail is also part of the GTA (Grande Traversata delle Alpi) and the TMR (Tour del Monte Rosa). The route may be made easier by taking the funiculars that connect Staffa, Alpe Bill and the Mount Moro Pass. For timetables, please visit www.macugnaga-monterosa.it
