From the Re railway station you can go directly down to cross the cycle path and take the bridge over the Melezzo stream. However, we recommend a slightly longer visit of the city with a cli to the center of Re which houses the characteristic Santuario Mariano. Continue for a short distance on the carriage road and immediately after the crossroads for Folsogno, turn right towards the cycle path which soon leads to the spectacular gorge of Pozzomaglione with a beautiful stone bridge. After crossing the bridge, turn right along the cycle path until you reach another bridge over the Melezzo stream which will take you back to the right bank. Continue along the cycle path and you will reach the bridge over the Melezzo stream where the direct route from the railway station arrives. After crossing the bridge take the M18 path that climbs up to Pian dei Sali (WWF Oasis) where you will cross the carriage road that you have to follow up to Finero. From Finero you can still follow the carriage road to Creves and, at the entrance of the tunnel, take the old road on the right (closed to cars) which leads to the monument in memory of the massacre of 12 October 1944 in which the partisan commanders Alfredo Di Dio and Attilio Moneta lost their lives. Continue until you cross the tunnel outlet, then continue on the carriage road until the crossroads for Cursolo (Municipal Hostel) which you have to follow up to the center of the town. From Cursolo, with a beautiful mule track equipped with explanatory panels, you will reach Orasso and the Belvedere Hotel, a stopover.

THE ROUTE:
Via Borromea

THE LEGS OF THIS ROUTE:
Via Borromea Leg 1: Re - Orasso
Via Borromea Leg 2: Orasso - Cannobio

Notable Items along the Track

The route connects the Sanctuary of Re in Val Vigezzo, dedicated to the Madonna del Sangue, with the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Pietà in Cannobio. With this route is possible to cross the wild Cannobina Valley: a few hundred inhabitants divided between 5 municipalities. The territory, of particular charm, still preserves the appearance of the past. The landscape is marked by the testimonies of traditional peasant life, based on subsistence agriculture. The villages are characterized by unexpected glimpses, ancient houses with votive paintings on the facades, small squares, rustic stone fountains, which are discovered along the narrow pedestrian streets. Some viewpoints allow you to look towards the other side of the valley with the wild mountains of the Valgrande National Park. In Traffiume, before Cannobio, the Cannobino torrent dug a spectacular ravine, the Orrido di Sant'Anna. Cannobio is the last town on the Piedmontese shores of Lake Maggiore before the border with Switzerland. Due to its geographical position, it represented an important strategic and commercial node, still well represented by the presence of numerous palaces of the XVII-XIX century which overlook the cobbled streets of the historic center such as the sixteenth-century residence of Palazzo Omacini and Palazzo Pironi.
